Ranked Choice Voting, Explained<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Starting in 2021, New York City is implementing ranked choice voting in municipal elections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It will ONLY be in primary elections and special elections, NOT general elections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It will ONLY be for: Mayor, Public Advocate, Comptroller, Borough President, and City Council races.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ranked Choice Voting lets you vote for multiple candidates and rank them in order of your favorites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you only vote for one candidate, your vote will still be counted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How to Vote<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This is what the ballot will look like:<\/p>\n\n\n

You will be able to rank up to 5 candidates. If there are more than 5 candidates, you can only rank 5. If there are less than 5 candidates, you can rank as many candidates as there are.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you rank more than one candidate as the same rank, your vote will NOT be counted:<\/p>\n\n\n

If you rank the same candidate multiple times, your vote for them will only count once.<\/p>\n\n\n

How Votes Are Counted<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

If a candidate gets at least 50% of first choice votes, that candidate wins.<\/p>\n\n\n

If no candidate gets at least 50% of first choice votes, the first choice votes of the candidate who came in LAST are reassigned to those voters\u2019 second choice.<\/p>\n\n\n

Voters whose choices have all been eliminated get moved into \u201cexhausted.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n

Candidates continue to be eliminated until a candidate reaches 50%.<\/p>\n\n\n

Choosing Your Favorite:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Like a candidate who you think might not win? Ranked choice voting eliminates the risk of \u201cwasting\u201d your vote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Making Your Vote Count the Most:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Voters who vote for just one candidate are more likely to have their votes moved to \u201cexhausted\u201d. Ranking increases the impact of your vote.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

How to Rank:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The candidate you like the most = Your first choice<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Candidates you are content with = Your lower rank choices<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Candidates you definitely don\u2019t want to win = Don\u2019t rank them at all<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n
